Southern Region Women's Football League
Chairman's Cup Round 1
Sunday 3rd December 2017
Newbury Ladies 1st 0 Oxford City Ladies 9
It was a hugely disappointing day for Newbury Ladies as they suffered a 9-0 home defeat in Round One of the Chairman’s Cup at the hands of Oxford City Ladies.

The initial stages saw Newbury start brightly from their kick off, with Tracey Beales and Amy McNab putting early pressure on the visiting defence and winning Newbury a corner. Ayala Truelove was within inches of connecting with Ellie Reed’s set piece, but the ball was then swept away to safety. The next passages of play saw Oxford City start to threaten the Newbury final third and goalkeeper, Carly Passfield, was called into action on two occasions. But she was unable to prevent the opening goal for Oxford City after 11 minutes. The blue and white attackers from Oxford were in a ruthless mood and they extended their lead to two goals just three minutes later. Newbury’s players were shell-shocked when two further goals were added in the 21st and 22nd minutes. Every ball played into the Newbury box was a dangerous cross and Oxford City’s finishing was clinical.

With the contest already beyond them, Newbury made their first change, which saw Jana Penazova moved back into defence in place of Ayala Truelove, and Bec Walker introduced in midfield. Newbury went event further behind on the half hour mark, with Oxford City five goals up. Ten minutes before the interval, saw a further Newbury re-shuffle, when Becky Anderson came into central midfield, allowing Beales to play further forward. The half time whistle came with the visitors leading 5 nil.

McNab was replaced for Newbury at half time and Truelove re-entered the fray, this time in midfield. There was to be no let-up for Newbury however, as a sixth goal was scored within three minutes of the re-start. Then in the 58th minute, an Oxford through ball hit and re-bounded off a Newbury defender and into the path of the attacker. The finishing was once again clinical and Oxford City had a seventh goal. There then came a twenty minute spell when Newbury showed character to re-group and look more compact. Anderson was heavily involved and able to link well with Beales, and Newbury’s player of the match, Reed, was a constant positive. There was to be no consolation goal for Newbury however and instead in the last ten minutes, Oxford City were able to convert twice more, taking their final tally to 9 goals without reply.

Newbury Ladies will now return their focus solely on their league campaign, but they now have a two week break between matches, returning on 17th December, when they will host Isle of Wight outfit, Shanklin Ladies.
