Match Report -- Season 2004-5
Peter Houseman Youth League - Girls Under 12
15th April 2005
Wolversdene A 1 AFC Newbury 0
This match was a classic ‘6 point’ encounter which would effectively decide the winners and runners up in this seasons PHYL under 12 premier division. The game opened with Newbury applying a lot of pressure. For the first 5 minutes the ball was rarely out of the Wolversdene half but the first shot of the game was to Wolversdene after a break out of defence into the Newbury half. Wolversdene then had more of the play and had Newbury on the defensive. Wolversdene had a 3 on 2 break but Honor Ramos in goal made a good save. Newbury bounced back and a Ruby Oliver cross from the right to Chelsea Stroud forced a good save from the keeper which went for a corner. Newbury really applied the pressure from this position which resulted in a series of corners. The half finished with a break down the right by Ruby after turning the defender and leaving her stranded. Ruby crossed to Holly who just failed to connect with the ball.

Wolversdene opened the half with some pressure gaining a corner but Newbury broke out of defence and Sophie Harvey passed to Ruby on the right who cut in and struck a powerful shot which was on target for the left hand corner with the keeper static on her line. Unfortunately the ball was deflected off a defender straight at the keeper who had no time to react and the ball simply rebounded off her clear of the net. Newbury then had a series of corners taken by Ruby the first of which Chelsea Stroud struck low and just to the right of the net. During this period whenever Wolvesdene broke clear Naomi Purvis was on hand to control the ball and get the attack going again. However the game swung back again to Wolversdene who had another good shot well saved by Honor in goal. Then from a throw in Ruby again crossed from the right and her cross was just missed by Chelsea Stroud. By now Newbury were really pressing for the win. Because of results earlier in the season a draw would favour Wolversdene. With all the Newbury players in the Wolversdene half Honor had to make a defensive header well out of her area. The pressure was now really on the Wolversdene goal. From a free kick by Honor Holly shot just wide then after a scrambled attack Lucy was unable to get to a loose ball a yard from the line before a defender cleared the ball. Wolversdene then had a dangerous break which Chelsea Allen cleaned up in the penalty area. Chelsea then passed the ball to Ruby in the box but her shot was again deflected this time for a corner. Then in added time and with Newbury totally committed to attack Wolversdene suddenly broke into the Newbury half with 3 players and only Honor to beat the attacker coolly scored to seal the league title for Wolversdene and confirm Newbury as runners up.
