Newbury Ladies 1st 0 Woodley Utd 3
The First Team of Newbury Ladies FC hosted Woodley United Ladies in their first home game of the campaign. Newbury started positively and had the game’s first chance after just three minutes, when good work by Shelley Forster gave possession to Nicole Beesley in the left hand channel. She cut in and crossed to an un-marked Jazz Bird on the edge of the Woodley area, but Bird’s first time shot was just wide, after she was closed down well by the last Woodley defender.

Newbury started with plenty of attacking intent and their high press was causing the Woodley back-line all sorts of problems. Woodley came through that sticky opening spell however and began to force a few openings of their own from mid-way through the first half. Kat Brown, in the Newbury goal, was called into action, when she came out of her goal quickly to clear from the feet of the on-rushing Woodley number nine. Woodley earned a few corners, but nothing much came from them until just after the 30 minute mark, when Newbury’s defence were turned. A cross came in from the right and a Woodley attacker was able to score a half volley to take a one nil lead.

Within just two minutes, Woodley had doubled their advantage from a similar situation and Newbury now found themselves two nil behind as half time approached.

The home side regrouped after the interval and the introduction of Club Captain, Ellie Reed, made a difference for Newbury. Reed was showing good composure in possession and was looking to spread the play at every opportunity. But in the 63rd minute a freak Woodley goal saw them take an unassailable three nil lead. A cross from the right drifted high into the far corner of the goal, just under the cross bar. It wasn’t meant, but it certainly counted. Newbury showed plenty of spirit, but they were unable to score a consolation. There had definitely been a real improvement in the Newbury performance, but sadly the result still went against them and it was yet another afternoon when their opposition claimed maximum points.
