Match Report -- Season 2011-12
Southern Region Women's Football League Division 1 South
Sunday 4th December 2011
Oxford Utd Reserves 5 Newbury Ladies 1
The match started fairly evenly, with just a slight advantage in the early possession to the home side. Oxford's No.8 tore down the right wing on 10 minutes and put in a quality cross that evaded both the Newbury back line and deputising goalkeeper, Caz Harkness. Although the cross was converted, the Referee ruled out this Oxford effort for an off side and it proved an early let-off for Newbury.

Newbury's central midfield pairing of Naomi Purvis and Lily Chubb were battling away well and Newbury began to launch a few attacks of their own. After one poor clearance from the Oxford keeper, Newbury's Ruby Olivier latched onto the loose ball and struck a fine effort from 35 yards. Unfortunately a covering defender managed to deflect the shot away from goal for a corner.

In the closing period of the first half, the momentum swung back to the home side, as they had a goal bound effort well saved onto the post by Harkness in the Newbury goal. As the Oxford pressure mounted however, their right winger found herself unmarked at the back post and she slammed home a finish from 8 yards as Oxford took a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later and the score was 2-0 to Oxford, with the same player hitting a powerful shot from the edge of the area that was just too hot to handle for Caz Harkness and she was unable to keep the effort out.

Oxford stretched their lead to 3 clear goals within three minutes of the second half starting, following a header from a floated free kick. And on 55 minutes it was 4-0 after a crossed ball from the right wing sailed above the goalkeeper and into the roof of the Newbury net.

Newbury refused to let their heads drop however and still looked to carve out a few opportunities. A Jenny Petrylak header went just wide of the Oxford goal, following a deep Leanne Creese free kick, and the Oxford keeper saved twice on the line to deny Ruby Oliver.

The hosts scored a fifth goal on 76 minutes, but they could not preserve a clean sheet after some strong persistence from Petrylak led to a Newbury consolation goal late on, when she robbed the Oxford defender and lobbed the keeper from 18 yards. Newbury could have scored a second from the penalty spot in the last 5 minutes of the match, after Petrylak was upended by an Oxford defender. Newbury's Ellie Reed could not convert from the spot however and so it ended with 5-1 to Oxford United the final score.
